The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of the field

After a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on goal, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.
